LEWISTON, PA - Johns Hopkins traveled to Bucknell over the weekend for a quarter of CWPA Southern Division contests. The Blue Jays went 1-3 on the weekend and are now 9-14 overall.
Princeton jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and the game stayed close as the teams traded goals in the second period. Hopkins trailed 3-2 at the half and 5-3 going into the final period. The Blue Jays jumped back into the game in the final quarter, scoring twice to even the game at 5-5, but the Tigers scored the final two goals of the game for the 7-5 win. Senior Peter Davis (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) scored a pair to lead the Blue Jays.
Hopkins offense exploded in its night game Friday to beat Gannon 17-6. With the game tied at 2-2 at the start of the second, the Blue Jays scored the first two of the quarter to take the lead for good. Hopkins outscored Gannon 12-2 over the second and third quarters. Davis, senior Alex Bond (North Wales, PA/Germantown Academy) and freshman Mark Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit) each netted hat tricks to pace Hopkins.
On Saturday, the home team shut down Hopkins as Bucknell won 10-3. The Bison kept the Blue Jays off the scoreboard until junior Jamie Neuwirth (Ross, CA/Phillips Andover (MA)) scored with just 20 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Sophomore John Barrett (Clarendon Hills, IL/Fenwick) had two goals for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins closed out the weekend with a tough loss to Mercyhurst. The Blue Jays trailed by just one goal, 9-8, heading into the final quarter, but the Lakers outscored the Jays 7-3 in the final eight minutes to take the win. Davis scored five goals for Hopkins .
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 as the Blue Jays host the Division III Eastern Championships. The #1 seed, JHU will take on Connecticut College in the first match Saturday. The Blue Jays will be sporting pink bathing suits the entire weekend in support of the fight against breast cancer. Members of the JHU Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be collecting donations at the door.
