BALTIMORE, MD - Head coach Greg Giovanazzi and the Johns Hopkins volleyball team kept its Centennial Conference win-streak alive, extending to three matches with its win over Washington, 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-14), on Wednesday in Goldfarb Gymnasium. Hopkins improves to 18-5 (6-1CC), while Washington falls to 11-15 (0-7CC) on the season.
Junior Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) served up eight straight points on the way to ending the set for the Blue Jays. The junior had two service aces during the run that put Hopkins up 22-9. A Sarah Feicht (Austin, TX/James Bowie) kill was followed by two Hopkins errors and a Washington error. Senior Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) notched a kill to end the set, 25-11.
In the second stanza, Washington tied the score at 8 before Hopkins raced to a 19-10 lead off the strong serving efforts of freshman Melissa Cole (Walnut, CA/Walnut) and junior Alex Zenoff (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco University HS), maintaining the serve for 12 points. Three Shorewomen errors combined with a Brittany Zimmer (Melville, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) service ace and two Hopkins kills propelled the Blue Jays to a victory in the second set, 25-16.
The third set saw sophomore Katie Kings (Pensacola, FL/Catholic High) record her first kill of the season in her first set of the season and just the second kill of her career. Senior Sarah Ratzenberger (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings) served up her first service ace of the season and the second of her career as well. Hopkins had five service aces in the third set with KC Stingl (Mission Viejo, CA/Vivian Webb), Ratzenberger, Rhea Alexander (Roseville, CA/Roseville), Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/ St. Mary's Hall) and Zimmer each earning an ace. The Blue Jays skated to an easy 25-14 win in the third set to take the match, 3-0.
Hopkins travels to Bryn Mawr on Saturday, October 25 to battle the Owls in Centennial Conference play. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
