EWING, NJ - Freshman Leslie O'Brien (Huntington, NY/Huntington) scored the first goal of her career in the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team's 1-0 win over The College of New Jersey. The victory marks the first time in 10 contests all-time that the Blue Jays have defeated the Lions. Hopkins remains unbeaten on the season and improves to 12-0-3 in the non-conference match, while TCNJ slips to 9-5-1.
O'Brien's goal in the 77th minute is the first Hopkins goal ever to be scored against The College of New Jersey in the 10-year series history. The goal was the first in the rookie's career and resulted from a Lisa Irizarry (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) cross.
Junior goalkeeper Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) earned her ninth shutout of the season and the 18th of her career, clinching the No. 3 spot in the JHU single-season record book. Guszkowski made six saves for the Blue Jays.
JHU was the second Centennial Conference team to beat The College of New Jersey in 2008. Conference foe Swarthmore won the battle with the No. 1 Lions, 4-3 on September 17.
In conference action, Swarthmore overcame Ursinus on October 22, 1-0 to jump to second place in the conference. Hopkins leads the conference with 21 points and owns a five-point advantage over Swarthmore in the Centennial standings.
No. 7 Hopkins will resume its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, October 25, traveling to Bryn Mawr to battle the Owls. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
