WESTMINSTER, MD - The McDaniel Green Terror handed the Johns Hopkins volleyball team its first loss in six games, 3-0 on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays had not fallen in a set in the last three Centennial Conference matches. Hopkins moves to 19-6 (7-2 CC) while McDaniel slides to 12-15 (5-4 CC).
Battling from behind in the first set, Hopkins fought a four-point deficit to tie it at 18 with an Adrienne Young (Oakton, VA/Thomas Jefferson) kill and a service ace from Kristen Kozielski (Columbia, MD/Atholton). Coming out of a timeout, the Blue Jays committed an error that was followed a McDaniel block to make it 21-18, forcing head coach Greg Giovanazzi to call a timeout. McDaniel took a 24-20 advantage as Giovanazzi called a second timeout. After a McDaniel kill, the Green Terror claimed the set, 25-20.
With McDaniel jumping to a 14-8 lead in the second set, Giovanazzi signaled for a timeout. The Green Terror then climbed to a 25-16 victory on five Hopkins errors and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Hopkins took its first lead of the match, 11-10 before McDaniel came back to tie it at 12. The Blue Jays rallied for a 5-1 run, but the Green Terror still owned a 23-19 advantage. After a Taylor Herrgott kill, Hopkins committed a net error to lose the set, 25-19. The Blue Jays suffered their first defeat in six matches.
Junior Rhea Alexander (Roseville, CA/Roseville) led the Blue Jays with 20 digs, while senior Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) recorded her second consecutive double-double with 10 kills and 15 assists.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 1 for its final regular season contest at home against Ursinus. First serve is set for 1 p.m. and will honor the accomplishments of the Blue Jay seniors.
