BALTIMORE, MD - In its final home contest of 2008, the Johns Hopkins volleyball team defeated the Ursinus Bears, 3-0, on Saturday at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays finish the regular season at 20-6 (8-2 CC) while Ursinus falls to 7-18 (1-9 CC) at the conclusion of regular season play. Head coach Greg Giovanazzi showcased the talents of each of the 18 Blue Jays to overcome Ursinus in three sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-15).
Brittany Zimmer (Melville, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) had six kills to lead Hopkins past Ursinus, 25-17 in the first set. Hopkins recorded 17 total kills in the first set alone.
After three straight Ursinus errors, Bears head coach Diana McNanee took a timeout. Hopkins assembled a 5-1 run to take a 12-6 lead out of the timeout, fueled by two Alex Zenoff (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco University HS) kills. McNanee signaled for another timeout as the Blue Jays earned a 16-7 advantage. Ursinus worked its way to within nine points before Hopkins took over, capturing the set, 25-15.
With a two-set advantage heading into the third stanza, Hopkins held a 12-8 lead to force an Ursinus timeout. Senior Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) squeaked a serve over the net to give the Blue Jays a 20-14 and Zenoff spiked it to the floor to put Hopkins up, 21-14 as Ursinus called another timeout. Freshman Melissa Cole (Walnut, CA/Walnut) added a kill to make it 22-14, followed by another Hopkins point, served up by sophomore Taryn Segal (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough). Sophomore Katie Kings (Pensacola, FL/Catholic High) notched two straight kills to end the set, 25-15.
Zenoff, who had nine kills, led the Blue Jays. Senior Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/ St. Mary's Hall) recorded 21 assists and inches to within 30 of the Centennial Conference career assist record. Junior Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) added 13 digs, while junior Rhea Alexander (Roseville, CA/Roseville) and Lewis each had seven digs for Hopkins.
