Johns Hopkins Goes Undefeated at Haverford with Six Wins

HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team continued its strong start to the season on Sunday, going 6-0 in a series of dual meets at Haverford. The Blue Jays are now 10-1 on the season. Hopkins picked up wins over NJIT (22-5), Stevens Tech (16-11), Stony Brook (21-6), Yeshiva (27-0), Army (20-7) and Cornell (16-11).

The Sabre team led Hopkins in the win over NJIT, going 9-0. Sophomore Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), sophomore Michael Fellows (Beverly, MA/St. John's Prep) and senior David Hill (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) each went 3-0.

In the match against Stevens Tech, Hopkins' third straight, the Blue Jays picked up close wins in all three weapons (Sabre 5-4; Epee 5-4; Foil 6-3). Seniors Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) and David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) and junior Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) each picked up two wins in the Foil for JHU.

Against Stony Brook, Hopkins went 7-2 in all three weapons for the win. Junior Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) won all three of his bouts to lead the Blue Jays in the Epee. Hill won all three of his bouts in the Sabre, while Einsiedler also went 3-0 in the Foil.

The Blue Jays went unbeaten in all three weapons in the match against Yeshiva. Wieder, Fellows and Hill all went 3-0 in the Sabre. In the Foil, it was Einsiedler, Nunly and Ferguson sweeping all of their bouts. While in the Epee, Oppenheim, junior Ian McCue (Yardley, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) and freshman Kenny Felsenstein (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) also swept all three of their bouts.

Dominating performances in the Sabre (8-1) and the Foil (7-2) led Hopkins to its win over Army. In the match against Cornell, the Big Red won the Foil in a close match (5-4). But wins 6-3 wins in the Sabre and the Epee gave the Blue Jays the win.

Wieder led the Blue Jays with a 17-1 record on the day, improving his season record to 38-10. He now has 128 career wins, ranking him 19th in program history in the Sabre. Einsiedler led Hopkins in the Foil, posting a 15-2 record to improve to 32-8 on the season. His improves his career win total to 141 and moving him into 19th place in JHU history in the Foil. And in the Epee, Oppenheim posted a 16-2 record on the day and is now 24-10 overall.

Hopkins returns to action at the Temple Open on Sunday, November 16.
