BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's swim team picked up wins over St. Francis (PA) and VMI but lost to Loyola over the weekend at the Thomas Murphy Invitational. The Blue Jays even their record at 3-3 with all three of their losses coming to Division I teams.
Hopkins opened the action on Friday with a fifth place finish in the 400 Medley Relay in a time of 4:19.37. Junior Robin Schaffer (Dublin, OH/Columbus School for Girls), junior Kayla Culver (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain), sophomore Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) and senior Jackie Rooney (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/The Culver Academies) swam the relay.
In the 500 Free, sophomore Kathleen Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) took fourth (5:19.32), while freshman Meaghan Bresnahan (Lighthouse Point, FL/DCardinal Gibbons) finished in fifth (5:20.03). Freshman Margaret Spach (Laguna Niguel, CA/Aliso Niguel) picked up Hopkins' first win of the weekend, taking first in the 200 IM in a time of 2:10.56. Freshman Elizabeth Rogers (North Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) followed with a win in the 50 Free. Her time of 24.58 is the eighth fastest in school history. Hopkins wrapped up action on Friday with a second place finish in the 800 Free Relay. Spach, Palopoli, senior Megan Zepp (Montgomery Village, MD/Stone Ridge) and freshman Khristine Ghemigian (Oak Park, CA/Oak Park) swam the relay in 7:59.62.
On Saturday, Hopkins opened with a second place finish in the 200 Free Relay. Rogers, Rooney, Ghemigian and freshman Shelby Stewart (Carmichael, CA/Rio Americano) swam the relay in 1:40.16. Spach won her second event of the weekend with a win in the 400 IM in 4:39.64. Junior Caitlin Dennis (Moorestown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy) followed in second in a time of 4:40.79, a career best.
The wins continued for the Blue Jays in the 100 Fly. Senior Sarah Andryauskas (Lexington, MA/Lexington) swam a season-best time of 58.14 for the win. Junior Lisa Qu (Atlanta, GA/The Westminster School) took third with a time of 1:00.97. Ghemigian then took second in the 200 Free (1:57.21), followed by Rogers in third (1:57.89). Freshman Tiffany Tembreull (Lino Lakes, MN/Circle Pines) placed fourth in the 100 Back in 1:01.80.
Dennis won her first event of the weekend, taking first in the 100 Breast in the 1:08.03. Hopkins then won the 200 Medley Relay in a time of 1:49.71. Freshman Lindsey Kent (West Bend, WI/Homestead), Dennis, Andryauskas and Rogers swam the relay. Spach placed second in the 200 Back in 2:11.51. Rogers won her second event, winning the 100 Free in 53.52, a season-best.
Dennis followed with a second place finish in the 200 Breast in 2:28.74. Sophomore Meagan Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) led a quartet of Blue Jays that finished second through fifth in the 200 Fly. Hopkins wrapped up the weekend with a second place finish in the 400 Free Relay. Ghemigian, Stewart, Spach and Rogers swam the relay in 3:39.85.
Hopkins returns to action at the Nike Cup Invitational hosted by Kenyon College, December 4-6.
