Muhlenberg Gets Past Hopkins 57-52

ALLENTOWN, PA - Lauren Boyle scored a game-high 19 points including the 1,000th of her career to lead Muhlenberg past the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team 57-52 on Saturday. Muhlenberg (18-5, 13-3) clinched a spot in the Centennial playoffs as the Mules swept the Blue Jays (10-12, 8-8) in the season series.

Muhlenberg got going early in the contest, running out to a 6-0 lead behind four points from Boyle. Hopkins responded with a 13-0 run to take a 13-6 lead with 14:25 to play in the first half. Senior Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) and sophomore Anastasia Wynn (Reisterstown, MD/McDonogh) had four points a piece during the scoring stretch. The Mules scored nine of the next 11 points in the contest to knot the game at 15-15 with 11:39 to go before the break. Shelia Cook knocked down four points for the Mules during the stretch.

The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes with a lay-up by Kelly McKeon making it a 21-21 game with 8:30 to play in the first stanza. Junior Kristin Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) knocked down a three-pointer at 7:08 to put the Blue Jays up 24-21. Muhlenberg, however would score 10 of the final 12 points in the half to take a 31-26 lead into the locker room at the break.

Hopkins hit the first two buckets of the second half to make it a 31-30 game with 18:45 to play. Muhlenberg went on a 10-3 scoring spree over the next four minutes to take it largest lead of the contest at 41-33. McKeon had four and Boyle contributed three during the run. The two teams then traded baskets with Muhlenberg's lead never getting bigger then six. A triple by junior Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) at 6:01 made it a 45-42 game in favor of the hosts.

A pair of made free throws by Phillips at 3:17 made it a 49-48 game. That would be as close as the Blue Jays would get as Muhlenberg scored eight of the final 11 points in the contest to secure the victory.

Boyle led the Mules with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. McKeon contributed 13 points while Erin McSherry led the Mules on the boards with 10.

Phillips led the Blue Jays with her seventh double-double of the season. She contributed 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Dodrill was just shy of a double-double on the day with 12 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) knocked down eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, February 20. The Blue Jays travel to Bryn Mawr for a 7 p.m. game time.
