HAVERFORD, PA - Junior Kristin Phillips scored eight of her game-high 16 points and freshman Lyndsay Burton added six of her 14 during a 23-2 first-half run to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a 67-45 victory at Haverford Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays, who trailed for all of just over two minutes early in the game before a Phillips three-pointer gave them the lead for good, have now won five of their last six games and improve to 10-10 overall and 8-6 in the Centennial. Haverford falls to 3-18 overall and 0-15 in the Centennial.
Hopkins led just 8-4 after a jumper by Haverford's Brittany Lattisaw with 14:24 remaining in the first half, but Phillips ignited the deciding run with the second of her four three pointers just over a minute later and the Blue Jays never looked back. Philips and Burton combined to score the first 10 points in the run, which lasted just under 11 minutes and extended JHU's lead to a game-high 25 points (31-6). Jenna Berninger, Andrea Dodrill, Siobhan Callanan and Anastasia Wynn also scored during the spree for the Blue Jays, who scored 19 points off of Haverford turnovers in the first half.
Hopkins led 31-11 at halftime and subbed liberally in the second half. A Phillips three-pointer gave the Blue Jays a 40-17 lead early in the second half and the Fords never cut the deficit under 17 in the final 17 minutes.
Phillips hit 5-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, and added three rebounds and two steals in just 23 minutes. Burton was 5-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line and needed just 14 minutes to score her 14 points. In all, 11 Blue Jays dented the scoring column and Hopkins forced 27 turnovers in running its all-time record against Haverford to 19-0.
Lattisaw (11 points) and Erica Juliano (10) were the only players to score in double-figures for the Fords. Haverford did hit all nine of its free throw attempts in the game, but allowed 30 points off turnovers and the JHU bench out-scored the Haverford bench 34-15 to fuel the rout.
Johns Hopkins will host Gettysburg on Tuesday, February 12 in a key Centennial Conference game. The Bullets are currently one game ahead of the Blue Jays in the league standings. Through Saturday's games there are four teams in a battle for the final two spots in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament with the Blue Jays and Bullets being joined in that race by McDaniel and defending Centennial Conference champion Ursinus.
The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team will also be teaming with the WBCA in its Think Pink initiative for the Gettysburg game. Hopkins will wear special white uniforms trimmed in pink as the Blue Jays aim to raise breast cancer awareness. Donations will be taken at the door and all proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Maryland. There will be raffles and prizes available and all fans attending are encouraged to wear pink.
