CARLSBAD, CA - Three different players netted a hat trick as #12 Johns Hopkins defeated #16 Oregon 10-9 Saturday afternoon at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, CA. The Blue Jays pull their record to 3-4 on the season while the Ducks fall to 7-3.
Hopkins jumped out to a 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals from sophomore Paige Ibello (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale) just 3:28 into the game. Ilsa van den Berg put Oregon on the board with an unassisted tally at 4:25, but that was answered with a goal from sophomore Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's) just over two minutes later to make it 3-1 Hopkins. Jana Bradley cut the Blue Jays lead to one at 7:58. However, Schrum and sophomore Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn) scored just 71 seconds apart to give Hopkins a 5-2 advantage.
Oregon called timeout to stem the tide, and it worked. Theresa Waldron scored three straight goals over the final 15 minutes of the half to knot the score at 5-5 heading into the lockerroom. Coming out of the half, Erin Chisnell scored on a free position shot to give the Ducks their first and only lead of the game. Hopkins got a pair of quick goals from Schrum and freshman Brooke Foussadier (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township) to retake the lead.
Cara Mead and Lindsay Killian then sandwiched a pair around a strike from Bathras and the score was knotted at 8-8 with 8:49 to play in the game. Ibello completed her hat trick with 7:46 to play on a free position shot, to give the Blue Jays the lead for good. Bathras then scored on an unassisted shot just over two minutes later to make it a two-goal game. Jana Bradley scored for Oregon with 1:43 to play to cut it to one. Chisnell got a shot off as time was winding down, but sophomore Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) came up with the save to give Hopkins the win.
O'Ferrall finished with seven saves in earning her first win of the season. She came on in the first half in relief of freshman Julianne Wisner (Parkton, MD/Notre Dame Prep). For the Ducks, Anna Poponyak made 10 saves in the cage.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, March 27 when Cincinnati visits Homewood Field. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
