HOBOKEN, NJ - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team went 2-2 in the 2008 Ducks Classic in Hoboken, NJ, as it took MIT in three sets before being edged by Frostburg State, 3-2. The Blue Jays are now 9-3 on the season.
The Blue Jays won the first set against the MIT Engineers, 25-19 and the second set 25-22. Hopkins entered the third set with a 2-0 lead, but the engineers fought hard, forcing the game to extra points. Hopkins overcame a tough MIT squad in the third set, 31-29.
Senior Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) had a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs to lead Hopkins, while junior Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) had 10 digs and six kills. Senior Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) connected on 23 assists.
Hopkins took on Frostburg State in the final match of tournament play on Saturday. Frostburg was victorious in the first set, 25-18, before the Blue Jays came back to win the second set by two, 25-23. Frostburg captured the third set, 25-23, but Hopkins rallied for an 11-point victory in the fourth set, 25-14, to force a deciding set. Frostburg took the fifth set, 15-9, to capture the match, 3-2.
Cappelaere had 11 kills, while Jackanich notched 10 kills for the Blue Jays. Lewis combined for 33 assists against Frostburg.
Hopkins is now 10-3 on the season and will travel to the Carnegie Mellon Crossover on September 19 and 20.
