Bucknell Tops #18 Johns Hopkins, 13-9

Sept. 26, 2008

BALTIMORE, MD - The 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays dropped its home opener 13-9 to Bucknell Friday night in CWPA Southern Division action. Hopkins slips to 5-8, 0-2 on the season while Bucknell improves to 8-5, 1-0.

The Bison jumped on top of the Blue Jays early, scoring five unanswered goals over the first 10 minutes of the match. Junior Kyle Gertridge (Gunn Prep/Paolo Alto, CA) finally put Hopkins on the board off a pass from junior Reid Fox (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) with 5:21 to play in the second quarter. Fox and senior Josh Kratz (Landsdale, PA/North Penn) followed with goals of their own to cut the deficit to two with 2:39 to play in the second. But Richie Hyden responded with a pair of goals in the final minute of the half to give Bucknell a 7-3 lead.

Hyden and Gabriel Heiber sandwiched a pair around a goal from Fox to start the third quarter and Hopkins trailed 9-4 with 5:19 to play in the quarter. Senior goalie Chris Hutchens (Granite Bay, CA/Bellarmine Prep) then stuffed Johnny Stupp on a five-meter shot to give the ball back to the Blue Jays. But a Hopkins turnover gave the momentum back to Bucknell. Stupp then capitalized, pushing the Bison's lead to 10-4. Kratz scored again but it was quickly answered by Sean Coghlan for the Bison. Senior Peter Davis (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) then scored with just one second on the clock, making it an 11-6 game heading into the final quarter.

Bucknell pushed its lead back to six goals with 6:42 to play with a strike from Hyden. Getridge answered with his third of the night, but a goal from Stupp once again made it a six-goal game at 13-7. Junior Eric Stewart (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn Prep) and Gertridge would close out the scoring for the game.

Hutchens finished with six saves, while sophomore Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) had two saves for the Blue Jays. For the Bison, Nick Donahue had eight saves and Miles Gilhuly finished with four saves.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 27 when Princeton visits the Newton White Athletic Center. The CWPA Southern Division match is slated for a noon start.
