BALTIMORE, MD - Princeton's Jeff Cole scored two goals in the final three minutes to lift #19 Princeton to a 15-14 win over #18 Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in the CWPA, while the Tigers even their record at 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the CWPA.
Hopkins got on the board first as junior Reid Fox (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) converted a long outlet pass from sophomore goalie Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) 1:22 into the first. Mark Zalewski answered for the Tigers just 20 seconds later. But a goal from senior Peter Davis (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) 16 seconds later gave Hopkins back the lead at 2-1. It went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half as each Blue Jay goal was answered with a Tiger goal. After a Cole goal knotted the score at 6-6 with 1:42 to play in the second quarter, Alex Edmunds scored on a turn-around shot with just three seconds on the clock to give Princeton a 7-6 lead, its first, heading into the half.
David de L'Arbre gave the Tigers a two-goal lead to start the third, but junior Kyle Gertridge (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) answered with a goal on a lob shot to make it a one-goal game. Princeton then got three goals to one for Hopkins over the next two minutes to push its lead to 11-8. The Blue Jays rallied with a 3-1 run of their own, including back-to-back goals from Davis, to cut it to one heading into the fourth.
Princeton opened the final stanza with a five-meter goal from Eric Vreeland just 46 seconds in to make it a 12-10 game. Senior Alex Bond (North Wales, PA/Germantown Academy) answered with his first of the day, followed by a fast-break goal from sophomore John Barrett (Clarendon Hills, IL/Fenwick) to tie the game at 12-12. But another five-meter goal for Fenwick gave Princeton back the lead. Just 10 seconds later, junior Peter Sauerhoff (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs School) scored to once again tie the game. Gertridge then gave Hopkins its first lead since the second quarter with 3:57 to play. Cole then scored back-to-back goals over the final 2:50 for Princeton to give the Tigers the win.
Selbst played the first and third quarters in goal and made five saves. Senior Chris Hutchens (Granite Bay, CA/Bellarmine Prep) played the second and fourth quarters and finished with two saves. Mike Merlone played the whole game in the goal for Princeton and finished with 13 saves in the win.
Gertridge scored a season-high five goals to lead the Blue Jays. For the Tigers, Zalewski and Cole scored four each to lead the way.
Hopkins returns to action next weekend at the Claremont Convergence Tournament in Claremont, CA Oct. 3-4. Hopkins will face Pomona-Pitzer in its first match on Friday.
