Johns Hopkins Goes 1-3 at Penn Dual Meets

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team (11-4) returned from the winter break and got back to action at the Penn Multi-Meets on Sunday, January 13. Hopkins dropped decisions to host Penn (18-9), Duke (20-7) and North Carolina (16-11) before defeating Sacred Heart (20-7). Senior Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) led the Blue Jays with eight wins on the day.

In the opening match of the day, the Quakers used a dominating performance in the Sabre, winning 8-1, to defeat the Blue Jays. Penn just edged Hopkins in the Epee, 5-4, and picked up a 6-3 win in the Foil. Sophomore Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) picked up the Blue Jays lone win in the Sabre. In the Foil, Dorfman, senior David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) and junior Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) each won a bout for JHU. And in the Epee, it was sophomore Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) leading the way with two wins.

Against the Blue Devils, the Blue Jays were swept in all three weapons. Sophomore Michael Fellows (Beverly, MA/St. John's Prep) paced Hopkins with two wins in the Sabre. Dorfman and senior Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) each earned a win in the Foil, while Krywopusk, sophomore Thomas Ronan (New Haven, CT/Pinkerton Academy (NH)) and junior Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) each won in the Epee.

In their third match of the day against North Carolina, Hopkins took the Foil (5-4), but UNC won in the Epee (5-4) and the Sabre (7-2). In the Sabre, Wieder and senior David Hill (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) combined for the two Blue Jay wins. Dorfman led Hopkins to a win in the Foil by sweeping all three of his bouts. In the Epee, Hopkins four wins were spread among Krywopusk, Ronan, Oppenheim and senior Dane Schiro (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown).

Hopkins swept all three weapons against Sacred Heart in its final match of the day. Wieder and Hill each won two bouts to lead the Blue Jays to a 5-4 win in the Sabre. In the Foil, sweeps by Dorfman and Einsiedler led Hopkins to a 6-3 win. The Blue Jays closed out with a dominating 9-0 win in the Epee, behind sweeps from Oppenheim and Krywopusk.

Dorfman finished 8-4 on the day and is now 23-6 on the season. He now boasts 195 career wins to his name, ranking him 26th in program history. He has 187 career Foil wins, ranking him 13th in JHU history among Foilists. With a 6-2 record on the day, Oppenheim moved to 38-13 on the season with 121 career wins. He now ranks 18th in JHU history among Epee fencers.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 24 as the Blue Jays host a series of dual meets.
