WEST CHESTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team dropped a pair of decisions on Saturday, falling to Division II power West Chester (221-137) and TCNJ (206-144). The Blue Jays slip to 2-5 on the season, while the Rams improve to 7-0 and the Lions improve to 7-1. The loss against TCNJ is the first ever in the program's history for Hopkins.
Hopkins opened the tri-meet with a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, coming in at 1:37.42. Swimming the relay were junior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose), seniors John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) and Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) and freshman Nicolas Gimenez (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale). Senior Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) took second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:10.94. Freshman Markus Kowalsky (Shorewood, MN/International School of Minnesota) took fifth in 4:19.73.
Sershon then picked up a win in the 100 Fly, taking the event in 52.58. Thomas followed with a win in the 100 Back in 51.80, more than two seconds faster than TCNJ's Tom Nawrot. Thomas' time is an NCAA B time. Freshman Matt Watson (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Prep) took fifth in the 500 Free with a time of 4:52.18, a career-best time. In the 100 Breast, freshman Tim Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science) took third (1:00.05) followed by Kegelman in fourth (1:00.91). Hopkins then took third in the 800 Free Relay in a time of 7:07.44. Freshman Daniel Raynard (Glenview, IL/Loyola Academy), Kleinguetl, Thomas and senior David Postetter (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) swam the relay.
Kowalsky took third in the 1650 Free with a time of 17:05.05, with freshman Patrick Lynch (Surrey, England/ACS Cobham International School) taking sixth in 17:16.61. Thomas, Nam, Sershon and junior Teddy Bulakul (Bangakok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) combined to win the 400 Medley Relay for Hopkins in a time of 3:30.02. Kleinguetl took his first win of the meet, winning the 200 Fly in 1:55.43. Sophomore Jonathan Pool (Gaithersburg, MD/Georgetown Prep) took fourth in 1:58.87.
Thomas completed his sweep of the Back events, taking the 200 in 1:55.49. Nam took third in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:12.33. He was followed by Kegelman in fourth with a time of 2:13.68. Hopkins wrapped up the meet with a third place finish in the 400 Free Relay in a time of 3:14.50. Bulakul, sophomore Alex Hsieh (Beijing, China/International School of Beijing), Postetter and Thomas swam the relay for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins returns to action on January 31 when Washington & Lee visits Baltimore. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am in the Newton White Athletic Center.
