Dickinson Downs Hopkins, 69-58, On Late Free Throws

CARLISLE, PA - Solid free throw shooting in the second half sealed the deal for Dickinson as it defeated the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team, 69-58 in Centennial Conference play. Hopkins slips to 6-10 (4-5 Centennial) as the Red Devils improve to 8-7 (6-4 Centennial).

Hopkins opened the game with nearly a four-minute scoring drought. Kristin Phillips was the first to dent the scoreboard at 16:06. The Red Devils advanced to their largest lead of the half at 4:51, 30-15. Lyndsay Burton cut the lead to 11 with a fastbreak layup at 4:15. Phillips grabbed the defensive board after a missed shot by Olivia Dewey. Burton hit a jumper on the next possession to make it a nine-point game, 30-21.

Dickinson would go up14 to end the half after converting a pair of free throws and a layup heading into halftime at 38-24.

Hopkins used a 9-3 run in second half, highlighted by six straight points by Burton, to cut the Red Devil lead to seven. The Blue Jays traded baskets with Dickinson for nearly three minutes, teetering between a seven and nine point deficit, before a 3-pointer by Brooke Muller at 5:47. Caitlin Sloane nailed one from behind the arc 13 seconds later to make it 54-47. Dickinson's Laura Lyons answered back with a 3-pointer of her own at 5:02, extending the lead back to 10.

A three-point play by Caitlin Sloane and a layup by Lyndsay Burton got Hopkins within five at 3:13. Burton fouled out of the game at 2:59, just after hitting the 20-point mark for the fifth consecutive game.

Dickinson hit both free throws to go back up seven with 2:59 remaining. Wynn knocked down the front end of a one-and-one situation at the free throw line to make it 2:17.

10 free throws by the Red Devils in the final two minutes would put Hopkins away for good as Dickinson shot 14-of-14 from the foul line in the second half and 92% in the game.

Sophomore Lyndsay Burton scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while senior Kristin Phillips finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and three steals. Senior Caitlin Sloane went 2-for-4 from 3-point range to score 11 points. The Red Devils had four players in double-figures, lead by Brooke Muller's 22 points.

Hopkins returns to Goldfarb Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 29 for a doubleheader with Washington College. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
