COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Three players scored in double-figures to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to its second win of the season over Ursinus, 64-46. The Blue Jays advance to an 8-10 (6-5 Centennial) record on the season and force the Ursinus Bears into a 4-13 (3-9 Centennial) record.
Taking the lead with 9:17 left in the first half, Siobhan Callanan scored a layup after an offensive rebound. Ursinus missed a 3-pointer on its next trip up the floor as Callanan collected the defensive board and was fouled. After knocking down both free throws, the Blue Jays took a 16-13 lead.
Eight straight points by Lyndsay Burton followed, giving Hopkins a 26-15 lead with 2:44 left in the half. JHU headed into the locker room with a 28-17 lead, after converting 10 Ursinus turnovers into 13 points.
Phillips opened the half with back-to-back layups before the Bears' Laura Krieger hit a 3-pointer at 18:11. Junior Anastasia Wynn answered with a shot from downtown on JHU's next possession to extend Hopkins' lead to 15, 35-20.
Phillips and Burton would combine to score the next 10 points, putting the Blue Jays up 45-25 with 12:52 to play. Hopkins would lead by as much as 25 in the second half, scoring 24 second-half points in the paint. JHU led the entire second stanza, with its bench contributing 13 points.
Kristin Phillips led Hopkins with 17 points and nine rebounds. Siobhan Callanan finished with 13 points in just 13 minutes of playing time, including 3-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe. Lyndsay Burton had 14 points and 10 rebounds to mark her 10th consecutive double-figure scoring game. Burton also surpassed the 500-career point plateau in the game. She entered the contest with 498 career points and her first layup at 5:09 in the first half put her on the mark.
Julie Brown had a team-high 13 points for the Ursinus Bears.
The Blue Jays return to the Charm City on Tuesday, February 3, as they host Centennial Conference foe Dickinson. The Centennial matchup is set for a 7 p.m. tilt in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
