BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team got a pair of second-half goals to shutout 18th-ranked Dickinson Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays remain tied atop the Centennial Conference standings with the win as they improve to 11-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the conference. The Red Devils slip to 8-3-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the Centennial. It is Hopkins second win this season over a top-20 opponent after shutting out then #10 Salisbury, 1-0, on September 23.
Senior Chand Balfour (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) nearly got Hopkins on the board in the 44th minute on a breakaway after a Dickinson free kick 30 yards from the Hopkins goal. Sophomore Sean Duggan (Morristown, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) blocked the Red Devils shot and the ball ricocheted out to a sprinting Balfour. With the entire Red Devil team up for the free kick, Balfour had no defenders between him and the goal. Dickinson goalie Cody Hickock came out to the top of the box to cut off Balfour's angle and was able to get his hands on the shot. The ball deflected left to senior John Scheuch (Ridgewood, NJ/Delbarton School), who's shot went just wide left.
Hopkins finally got on the board in the 53rd minute, capitalizing on a free kick from 50 yards, near the left touchline. Sophomore Drew Holland (Sudbury, MA/Belmont Hill School) played a nice ball to the right end line to junior Tony Gass (Durham, NH/Oyster River). Gass collected the ball and sent it back across the mouth of the goal, where junior Chris Wilson (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) headed it in at the far post. The Blue Jays then gained a man-advantage in the 63rd minute when Dickinson's Mike Montross was sent off after receiving a red card. Junior Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne) scored an insurance goal in the 87th minute to push Hopkins lead to 2-0. Scheuch played a long ball down the right side, where Bukoski ran onto it. He dribbled into the box and beat Hickock to the left post for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Senior Ravi Gill (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) finished with three saves in posting his seventh shutout of the season and eighth of his career. He now ranks seventh in program history in career shutouts. Hickock posted eight saves in the loss for the Devils. Hopkins outshot Dickinson 22-7 and held a 5-2 advantage in corners.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, October 16 when Ursinus visits Homewood Field. The Centennial Conference tilt is slated to begin at 7:00 pm.
