WASHINGTON, PA - Senior Peter Sauerhoff (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs School) scored a match-high six goals to help lead Johns Hopkins to the 2009 CWPA Division III Eastern Championship. JHU beat host Washington & Jefferson, 24-6, on Sunday in the championship match at the Henry Memorial Natatorium. The title is the 12th overall and second consecutive for the Blue Jays since the tournament began in 1991.
The Blue Jays (13-13) scored at least 18 goals in all four matches at the tournament, as they outscored their opponents 88-13. Junior John Barrett (Clarendon Hills, IL/Fenwick) added five goals in the finale. He was one of 10 different JHU players to score at least one goal. The Blue Jays rushed out to an 8-3 lead after one period and then added 15 consecutive goals to raise its lead to 20 (23-3) early in the fourth quarter.
Washington & Jefferson finished second in the championship tournament for the second time in history. The Presidents (8-9) were led by senior Steve Hilty's hat trick. Junior Bill Krause, sophomore Andy Rish and freshman Alex Shuey all notched one goal for the Presidents.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 28 as the Blue Jays travel to Washington, DC to take on George Washington in CWPA Southern Division action. The match is slated to begin at 7:00 pm. Hopkins then wraps up the regular season on Saturday at home against Navy at 3:00 pm.
