BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins defeated McDaniel (25-15, 20-25, 34-32, 28-26) in an exhilarating volleyball match at Goldfarb Gymnasium. With the win, Hopkins improves to 15-10 overall and 4-5 in the Centennial Conference while McDaniel falls to 17-11 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
In the first set the Blue Jays jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, thanks to a five point serving run from senior Kristen Kozielski (Columbia, MD/Atholton). Hopkins led the entire set which ended 25-15. The second set saw the opposite story. McDaniel took the lead and never looked back, winning 25-20.
The excitement began in the epic third set. McDaniel led the entire set until a McDaniel hitting error knotted the game at 24-24. Hopkins would take its first lead at 27-26. McDaniel would spoil the game point and take a 28-27 lead. McDaniel had nine game points from leading 24-22 to 32-31 but Hopkins fought and won all nine game points.
Hopkins tied the game at 32 on a kill by senior Alex Zenoff (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco University HS). Hopkins would score points 33 and 34 on McDaniel hitting errors to take the set. Junior KC Stingl (Mission Viejo, CA/Vivian Webb) served the last two points for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays came out strong in the fourth set taking a 6-0 lead on freshman Becky Paynter's (Columbia, MD/Atholton) six-point service run. Hopkins would lead until 24-24, when McDaniel fought-off two game points from 24-22. McDaniel would take a 26-25 lead but would ultimately fall when Hopkins won the next three points. Zenoff had the game and match ending kill.
Senior Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) lead the Blue Jay offense with 16 kills and only one hitting error on 34 total attempts. Sarah Feicht (Austin, TX) had 12 kills while Melissa Cole (Walnut, CA/Walnut) and Zenoff had 11 kills each on the night.
For McDaniel, Taylor Herrgott had 12 kills and Emily Creigton had 10 kills in the match. Kristen Nuckles had 29 assists.
The Blue Jays are still alive in the playoff hunt. One more victory and some help around the conference could give Hopkins the fifth and final spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs.
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, October 31 at Ursinus. It is another must win match for Hopkins. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
