LANCASTER, PA - Sophomore Annie Tsay (Sacramento, CA/Mira Loma) claimed individual wins in the 100 Breast and 200 IM to help Johns Hopkins to a 148-114 win at Franklin & Marshall Saturday. The Blue Jays, in their first dual meet against a Division III opponent this season, improve to 1-2. Saturday's meet was the season opener for the Diplomats.
Hopkins opened the meet, taking second and third in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of sophomore Lindsey Kent (West Bend, WI/Homestead), Tsay, freshman Eleanor Gardner (Smiths, Bermuda/Bermuda) and sophomore Elizabeth Rogers (North Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) took second in 1:53.03. Sophomore Margaret Spach (Niguel, CA/Aliso Niguel), senior Caitlin Dennis (Moorestown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy), junior Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) took third in 1:58.09.
In the 1000 Free, freshman Cathy Howard (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) took second with a time of 10:49.92. Hopkins then took first and second in the 200 Free. Freshman Kristen Ferriero (Long Valley, NJ/Pope John XXIII) took first in 1:59.84 and sophomore Khristine Ghemgian (Oak Park, CA/Oak Park) took second in 1:59.98. The Blue Jays followed that up with a second-third finish in the 100 Back. Freshman Daniella Villegas (Bellflower, CA/Cerritos) claimed second (1:04.33), while Spach took third (1:04.55).
Tsay and Dennis then combined to go one-two in the 100 Breast in 1:07.54 and 1:11.41, respectively. While sophomore Meagan Heslin (Wykcoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) and Palopoli went two-three in the 200 Fly. Hopkins then took two-three in the 50 Free. Gardner took second in 25.82, followed by Rogers in third in 25.86. Rogers and Gardner then went one-two in the 100 Free. Rogers took the win in 54.90, with Gardner finishing in 55.39. In the 200 Back, Hopkins went two-three-four, picking up nine points. Ferriero placed second (2:17.09), followed by Spach (2:20.46) and senior Robin Schaffer (Dublin, OH/Columbus School for Girls) (2:20.80).
Dennis followed that with a win in the 200 Breast, coming in at 2:31.45, more than five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Freshman Casey Navin (Madison, NJ/Madison) took fourth in 2:41.48. Howard then took a win in the 500 Free with a time of 5:17.37, while Ghemigian took third (5:22.17) and sophomore Heidi Culver (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) took fourth (5:28.35). Heslin (1:03.17) and freshman Nicole Wain (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) (1:03.95) took two-three in the 100 Fly. Tsay and Spach then followed that with a one-two finish in the 200 IM in 2:14.99 and 2:19.31, respectively.
Hopkins closed out the meet taking first and third in the 200 Free Relay. Ferriero, Rogers, Gardner and Tsay won the relay in 1:41.70. While Ghemigian, Villegas, Palopoli and senior Katie Vance (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) took third in 1:44.96.
Hopkins returns to action at the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational at Loyola on November 6 and 7. The invitational begins Friday at 5:00 pm.
