CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Johns Hopkins got 11 kills and 12 digs from senior Allison Cappelaere and the Blue Jays had their fourth-best hitting effort of the season to fuel a 25-11, 25-16, 25-22 win at Washington College on Tuesday night. The victory snaps a three-match losing streak for the Blue Jays, who improve to 12-7 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial Conference. Washington slips to 9-9 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial. The win is also the 20th straight for the Blue Jays against the Shorewomen with the last 19 coming by sweep.
The Blue Jays broke a 5-5 tie in the first game with a 7-0 run on the serve of junior Alicia Diehl before Washington called timeout. The Shorewomen sliced the deficit to 13-8, but the Blue Jays quickly pushed their lead out to 19-9 and closed the first game with five straight points on the serve of Cappelaere. A pair of Sarah Feicht kills and an ace by Cappelaere fueled the 5-0 game-ending run.
Washington led early in the second game and were within one at 14-13 before Amelia Thomas served out seven straight points to give the Blue Jays a 21-13 lead. A pair of kills by Cappaelaere and three by Alex Zenoff and an ace by Thomas led the way during the 7-0 run. Washington was never closer than seven points before a Melissa Cole kill closed out the game-two win for the Blue Jays.
The third game was close throughout as there were 10 ties before the Blue Jays scored six of eight points down the stretch to extend a 16-15 lead to 22-17. Washington got within two at 24-22, but a Zenoff kill closed the match and JHU's 26th win in 33 all-time matches against Washington.
In addition to Cappelaere's double-double, the Blue Jays got 10 kills from Zenoff and 31 assists and seven digs from freshman Becky Paynter. The Blue Jays hit .306 as a team with 43 kills and just 10 errors in the sweep.
Washington was led by Lauren Feeny and Alyssa Forget, who both registered seven kills in the loss.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Thursday, October 8 when the Blue Jays travel to Swarthmore for another Centennial Conference match.
