Final Stats
BALTIMORE, MD - Loyola College won 14 of the first 16 events at the Thomas Murphy Invitational to defeat Johns Hopkins, 224-103. Loyola has now won two straight against JHU, the first time that has happened since the Greyhounds won the first four meetings between the two programs.
JHU took third in the 400 Medley Relay to open the invitational on Friday night with a time of 3:32.63. Senior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) opened the relay with a split of 53.97, with sophomore Tim Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science) finishing his leg in 59.55. Freshman Nick Schmidt (Bells, TN/University School of Jackson) swam the third leg in 51.87 with senior Teddy Bulakul (Bangkok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) closing out with a 47.24 leg. Freshman Kevin Morlock (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) was the Blue Jays top finisher in the 500 Free, finishing in 4:52.12 for fourth place, his fastest time of the season.
Nam then took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.55, the fastest time on the team so far this season. Bulakul and sophomore Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou) then went three-four in the 50 Free with times of 21.79 and 21.82, respectively. Hopkins wrapped up Friday night's action with a three-four finish in the 800 Free Relay. The team of Schmidt, senior Neil Mahoney (Excelsior, MN/Minnetonka), Thomas and sophomore Stephen Niemiec (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) took third in 7:17.40. Finishing in fourth was the team of Bulakul, Morlock, freshman Jason Ho (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and sophomore Patrick Lynch (Surrey, England/ACS Cobham International School) with a time of 7:24.73. Loyola held a 77-14 lead in the meet at the end of the night.
Hopkins opened Saturday's action with a second place finish in the 200 Free Relay, finishing in 1:27.65. Zandee, freshman Tyler Woods (San Diego, CA/La Jolla), Bulakul and Mahoney swam the relay. Lynch was then the top finisher for JHU in the 400 IM with a time of 4:25.97. Schmidt, freshman Carter Gisriel (Lutherville, MD/Towson) and senior Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) then went two-three-four in the 100 Fly. Schmidt claimed third with a time of 53.65, with Gisriel taking fourth (53.75 - a career best) and Moisiades fifth (54.93).
Hall took fifth for the Blue Jays in the 200 Free with a time of 1:50.53, his best of the season. Thomas then extended his streak of wins in the 100 Back, with a time of 52.38, nearly one second faster than second-place Sam McQuaid (53.21). Freshman Dylan Coggin (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) took fourth with a time of 55.75 - a season best. Nam took third in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:00.35. Morlock followed with a win in the 1650 Free for Hopkins, taking first in 16:49.99.
Hopkins took second in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:37.22, the fastest time this season for the Blue Jays. Swimming the relay were Thomas, Nam, Schmidt and Bulakul. In the 200 Back, Thomas took third in a time of 2:01.04. It was his first loss in the 200 Back since the 2009 ECAC Championships. Hall followed in a time of 2:04.31. In the 100 Free, Zandee finished in third in 48.53, a career best time for the sophomore. Nam then took third in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:13.01. Loyola swam exhibitions for the final two events as the Greyhounds took the meet, 224-103.
Hopkins is idle for the next month, returning to action at the Nike Cup, hosted by Kenyon College December 4-5.
