Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team rebounded from Tuesday's loss to defeat Swarthmore, 76-65, in a Centennial Conference tilt at Goldfarb Gym. Sophomore Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) drained a team-high 19 points for the Blue Jays. With the win, Hopkins improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference. Swarthmore falls to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

The first half was a hard fought battle between the two teams. Swarthmore obtained a 12-7 lead with 13:30 remaining on the clock thanks in part to three field goals by junior Kathryn Stockbower and a 3-pointer by junior Ceylan Bodur. The Blue Jays tied the score two and a half minutes later on one of Mattiola's five 3-pointers in the game and a lay-up by junior Nia Josiah (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson). There would be three more ties in the next five minutes of play.

The Blue Jays would build a seven-point lead, 41-34, by halftime. Mattiola sunk three 3-pointers in the half, including one as the shot clock hit zero with 4:04 left in the half. Bodur had 18 points and Stockbower had 14 points in the first stanza for the Garnet, combining for all but two of Swarthmore's points in the half.

Hopkins would quickly increase their lead in the second half on a Lesle Markun (Mill Valley, CA/The Branson School) 3-pointer. Markun went 2-2 from beyond the arc in the game.

The Blue Jay lead would fall to less than 10 points only once in the second half on a pair of Bodur free-throws with 12:05 left in the game. Hopkins' biggest lead of the day would come with 6:41 showing on the clock on an old-fashioned three-point play by junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central). Burton finished the day with 11 total points.

Multiple Blue Jays had strong offensive efforts in the win. Mattiola led the team with her career-high 19 points and went five-for-nine from 3-point range. Senior Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Anastasia Wynn (Reisterstown, MD/McDonogh) finished with 12 points on the day. Sophomore Stephanie Fong (Castro Valley, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) had a career-high seven assists.

Swarthmore had the two leading scorers in the game. Bodur drained 25 points and Stockbower sunk 21 points in the losing effort. Stockbower also grabbed 13 rebounds for her eighth consecutive double-double. Stockbower is only 11 points away from 1,000 in her career.

The Blue Jays had an impressive 16 steals in the game. Hopkins shot 43.8% (28-64) from the floor and 47.1% (8-17) from beyond the 3-point line. The Garnet shot 39.2% (20-51) from the floor.

The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, December 5 when they travel to Dickinson to play the Red Devils. The conference game is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
