Box Score
CARLISLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team fell to the Red Devils of Dickinson, 68-61, at the Kline Center in Carlisle, PA. Freshman Alex Vassila (Potomic, MD/Winston Churchill) led all scorers on the day with 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half. With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Centennial conference. The Red Devils improve to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
The first half of play was a back-and-forth battle that saw seven lead changes. The Red Devils went on a 10-0 run in the last 3:09 of the first half to take an eleven point lead at half time, 37-26. Junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) had nine of her 11 total points in the first half. Dickinson freshman Lindsay Finnerty scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half.
The Blue Jays fought right back into the game as senior Anastasia Wynn (Reisterstown, MD/McDonogh) drained a 3-pointer just 14 seconds into the second half. Hopkins pulled within three points, 40-37, on a mid-range jumper by junior Nia Josiah (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) with 15:47 remaining in the game.
An old-fashioned three-point play by junior Carole Dempsey of Dickinson built the lead to six points. Wynn would answer with back-to-back lay-ups to bring the score to 43-41 with 13:45 remaining in the game. This is the closest the score would get, however, as the Red Devils went on a 17-8 run over the next eight minutes of play. A 13 point second half effort by Vassila would not be enough for the Blue Jays to overtake the Red Devils.
The difference in the game was Blue Jay fouls and made free-throws by Dickinson. The Blue Jays committed 27 fouls in the game while the Red Devils committed only 12. Dickinson shot 27-39 (.692) from the free-throw line. Eighteen of Dickinson's 31 second half points were on free-throws. Hopkins shot 3-7 (.429) from the free-throw line in the game.
The Blue Jays out-shot the Red Devils going 28-71 (.394) compared to Dickinson's 19-51 (.373). Dickinson, however, went 3-7 (.429) from beyond the arc while the Blue Jays were only 2-11 (.182). Hopkins out-rebounded Dickinson 44 to 39.
Vassila set her career-high points total with 15 and grabbed a career-high 9 rebounds. Burton and Wynn each had 11 points. Dickinson had four players score in double-digits. Senior Brooke Muller led the way with 14 points. Finnerty had 12, Dempsey had 11, and junior Alesha Sisco scored 10 point in the game.
The Blue Jays return to action on Tuesday, December 8 when they travel to Gratham, PA to play the Falcons of Messiah College. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
