BALTIMORE, MD - Visiting Elizabethtown won the first three matches to a take an early 10-0 lead and cruised to a 30-9 win over host Johns Hopkins in non-conference wrestling action at Goldfarb Gymnasium Wednesday night. The win improves Etown's record to 1-2, while Johns Hopkins slips to 0-1.
Etown's Will Bently and Eric Rhoads sandwiched victories by decision around a major decision by Marty Harnish in the first three bouts to stake Etown to the early 10-0 lead.
Johns Hopkins hopped back in the match with a 6-1 win by sophomore Michael Testa over Jarrod Cawley at 149 and a 5-2 victory by Eric Levenseller over Kyle Deeds at 165 to draw JHU within 14-6. Max Barsky had extended the 10-3 lead after Testa's win to 14-3 with a 14-6 major decision victory at 157.
Any hopes for a Johns Hopkins upset were dashed at 174 and 184 when Julian Meaney and Jim Gentile scored a major and a pin, respectively, to extend the lead to 24-6.
Freshman Reid Mosquera provided a thrilling win at 197 for Johns Hopkins as he erased an 8-7 deficit with a takedown of Paul Connor at the buzzer to score a 9-8 victory.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on January 5 when the Blue Jays travel to NYU to take on Centennary College (NJ) and the host Violets.
