BALTIMORE, MD - - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team has moved above .500 on the season after winning it's fifth-straight Centennial Conference game, defeating Haverford, 52-44 in Goldfarb Gymnasium on Saturday. The Blue Jays are now 11-10 (9-5 Centennial) as Haverford falls to 4-14 (3-11 Centennial).
The Fords scored a layup off of the opening tip and looked to have control early, taking a 9-2 lead after three minutes, but Caitlin Sloane came up with the answer, a 3-pointer from the left wing. Haverford would lead for the majority of the first half and it wasn't until 1:42 that Hopkins would take the lead, with Sloane burying two free throws. The Blue Jays escaped the first half with a 25-24 lead.
Sloane opened the half with her third 3-pointer of the game and Anastasia Wynn followed with a fast break layup off a pass from Sloane to take a 30-24 lead.
Hopkins stretched its grip to 36-29 after back-to-back layups from Siobhan Callanan at 14:59. A 6-0 run by JHU with buckets by junior Monica Mitchell, freshman Stephanie Fong and senior Kristin Phillips gave Hopkins a 10-point advantage with 7:06 to play. Haverford's Kathleen Abels hit two free throws a moment later to cut it to eight.
The Blue Jays would score just one point in the next three minutes, a free throw by Phillips, but was still in the lead at 45-41 with 4:02 left.
Hopkins would not score a field goal in the final two minutes, but six free throws sealed the victory for JHU, its fifth-straight.
Haverford out-rebounded JHU 48-41, the first time an opponent has pulled down more boards than Hopkins since McDaniel on January 22.
Leading the Blue Jays was senior Caitlin Sloane with 14 points, after hitting 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and had five steals. Kristin Phillips had another double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Lyndsay Burton had 11 points, five coming from the free throw line and pulled down nine rebounds.
Kathleen Abels had a game-high 19 points to lead Haverford. She also grabbed nine rebounds, a team-high. Brittany Lattisaw scored 14 points and was the only other Ford in double-figures.
Hopkins treks to Gettysburg on Tuesday, February 10 to face the Bullets in a crucial Centennial Conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
