PITTSBURGH, PA - Carnegie Mellon scored in the 13th minute and made the 1-0 lead stand as the Tartans shut out visiting 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Friday night. The Blue Jays suffer their first loss of the 2009 season and slip to 4-1-0, while the Tartans improve to 4-1-0. The loss is the first in the regular season for JHU since a 1-0 loss on Oct. 31, 2008 to Washington College.
Pat Lutz gave the Tartans in early lead, scoring his first goal of the season in the 13th minute. Ian Epperson lofted the ball to Lutz, who headed it past senior goalie Ravi Gill (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) from about 25 yards out. Gill finished with two saves in his first career loss. The Tartans outshot the Blue Jays 8-2 on the night, while Carnegie Mellon also had 15 fouls to just five for Johns Hopkins.
