BALTIMORE, MD - The 25th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team scored a goal in each half Wednesday afternoon in a 2-0 shutout of visiting Cabrini. The Blue Jays improve to 6-1-0 with the win, while the Cavaliers saw their five-game win streak snapped in the loss to fall to 5-2-0. Hopkins remains unbeaten against Cabrini, improving to 4-0-1 in the all-time series.
Johns Hopkins took an early 1-0 lead, capitalizing on a Cabrini foul at midfield. Senior Nate Wysk (Dunedin, FL/Palm Harbor University High) took the free kick, lofting it into the Cavaliers' box. Senior Chand Balfour (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) headed it across the box to a wide-open Max Venker (Oldsmar, FL/Palm Harbor University) who took one step and fired a shot inside the left post in the fifth minute.
The Blue Jays pushed their lead to two in the 59th minute as junior Chris Wilson (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) connected with junior Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne) for the fifth time this season. Wilson used his speed to keep the ball in play along the right touchline. He collected the ball and dribbled down the line to the corner, where he played a nice cross into the box. Bukoski ran onto the ball, dove and played the ball off his chest inside the right post.
Senior Ravi Gill (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) stopped all five shots he faced in posting his third shutout of the season. Bryan Johnson finished with two saves in the loss for the Cavaliers. Hopkins outshot Cabrini 17-8, while the corners (4-4) and fouls (9-9) were even.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 19 in the Blue Jays Centennial Conference opener at ninth-ranked Swarthmore. Game time is slated for 7:00 pm.
