BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins defense held visiting Moravian to 95 yards of total offense and six first downs and the Blue Jays got a pair of touchdown receptions from junior Dan Crowley (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) as the Blue Jays eased past the Greyhounds, 27-0, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The win is the third straight for Johns Hopkins, which improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while Moravian slips to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays scored in every quarter, led 17-0 at the half and 20-0 at the end of the third quarter. Only once in the first three quarters did Moravian move into Blue Jay territory and that drive ended with when Brian Peters (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) intercepted a shovel pass at the Blue Jays 29-yard line.
An 11-yard Crowley touchdown reception capped a seven-play, 59-yard drive midway through the first quarter to give the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead. That lead held until early in the second quarter, when senior Andrew Kase (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) put the finishing touches on a methodical 13-play, 67-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run just under two minutes into the second quarter. A 21-yard Alex Lachman (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) field goal accounted for the 17-0 lead at the half.
The Johns Hopkins defense established its presence from the outset as Mike Milano (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) intercepted a Steve Panasuk (Yorktown, NJ/New Egypt) pass on the first play of the game and the Greyhounds managed just 32 yards on 28 plays in the first half.
Any hopes of a Moravian comeback were dashed on the `Hounds first four drives of the second half as they netted only 12 yards of total offense on those three drives.
In the interim, the Blue Jays added a 23-yard Lachman field goal and a 24-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Hewitt Tomlin (Jackson, TN/Trinity Christian) to Crowley. The scoring pass from Tomlin to Crowley came one play after Ryan Piaktek (Sewell, NJ/Bishiop Eustace) intercepted a Patrick Weiss (Gilbertsville, PA/St. Pius X) pass. The interception was one of three for the Blue Jays on the day as the JHU defense enjoyed its most impressive outing of the season. Hopkins posted 12 tackles for losses and four sacks to go along with the three interceptions.
Moravian generated 51 of its 95 yards and three of its six first downs on its final possession of the game as Weiss moved the Greyhounds from their own nine-yard line to the Blue Jay 40 before turning the ball over on downs. Johns Hopkins rank out the final 4:28 of the game to seal its first win against Moravian since the `Hounds joined the Centennial Conference in 2007.
Tomlin was 18-of-27 for 227 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while Crowley was on the back end of six of those completions for a career-high 124 yards and the two scores. Kase rushed for 90 yards and the one touchdown as the Blue Jays rolled up 411 yards of total offense and held a decided advantage in time of possession (34:34 - 25:26).
Milano led the Blue Jay defense with eight tackles, including one for a loss, the one interception and one other pass breakup. Senior Glenn Rocca (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) added six tackles, including two for losses.
Ryan Rempe (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley) rushed 20 times for 39 yards, but the rest of the Moravian ground game was held to minus 23 yards on nine carries. Panasuk and Weiss combined to go just 10-of-26 for 79 yards with the three interceptions. Philip Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and Evan Bauer (Bethlehem, PA/liberty) both posted 12 tackles to lead the Greyhound defense.
Johns Hopkins hits the road for its next two games. The Blue Jays will travel to Allentown next Saturday to take on two-time defending conference champion Muhlenberg. The Mules dropped a 20-3 decision at Gettysburg earlier Saturday afternoon.
