Bukoski's Goal Lifts Johns Hopkins over McDaniel, 1-0

Box Score

Sept. 30, 2009

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, MD - Junior Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne) scored in the 33rd minute and senior Ravi Gill (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) made three saves as Johns Hopkins shut out host McDaniel, 1-0, on a blustery afternoon Wednesday. The Blue Jays win their third straight, all by shutout, and improve to 9-2-0 (2-1-0 CC) while the Green Terror see their two-game win streak snapped and fall to 5-5-0 (2-1-0 CC).

For the first 45 minutes play was confined mostly to the midfield as the two teams combined for just eight shots. Hopkins did break through in the 33rd minute thanks to some nice combination passing. From the left touchline, junior Evan Kleinberg (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) dribbled into midfield and passed to senior Max Venker (Oldsmar, FL/Palm Harbor University). Venker, with his back to the McDaniel goal, touched the ball to his left, right back to a streaking Kleinberg. He collected the pass and played a long ball over the Green Terror defense to Bukoski. McDaniel goalie Robert Hollasch came out to the top of the box to challenge Bukoski, who touched the ball to his right to avoid Hollasch. He then fired a low, hard shot into the open net for his team and conference-best ninth goal of the season.

Hopkins stepped up the pressure in the second half, outshooting McDaniel 11-3. The Blue Jays were unable to break through a second time, despite some great scoring chances. The Green Terror's best chance came in the 89th minute as Adam Sommers tried to go near post with a hard shot, but Gill was there to make the save.

Gill pitched his third consecutive shutout and sixth of the season as the Green Terror were held scoreless for the first time since October 25, 2008. Hollasch finished with four saves for McDaniel. It was a physical match between the two rivals, with 31 total fouls and three cautions.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 3 as the Blue Jays travel to Allentown, PA to take on Muhlenberg in a critical Centennial Conference game. Game time at Varsity Field is set for 7:00 pm.
