BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Ursinus, 63-44, at Goldfarb Gym. Freshman Alex Vassila (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) tied her career-high in points and assists with 15 and 9, respectively. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference. The Bears have a record of 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Ursinus jumped out to an early lead, 7-2, after a layup by junior Alex Shivers a minute and half into the game. Junior Nia Josiah (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) tied the game, 9-9, with a 3-pointer with 15:29 showing on the clock. The game would continue back-and-forth with Hopkins ahead, 23-18 with 9:57 remaining in the half.

The Bears would go on a scoring draught until senior Julie Brown hit a jumper at 1:23. The Blue Jays were on a 9-to-nothing run during this time. Hopkins entered the locker room with a 34-22 lead.

The closest Ursinus would come to catching Hopkins would be at 15:14 in the second half after an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore Lindsay Teuber to cut the Hopkins lead to seven.

Hopkins held its biggest lead twice at 22 points, both in the final five minutes of play.

Vassila led the Blue Jays in scoring with her 15 points and was just one rebound away from her first career double-double. Junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, a game-high. The two high-scorers both shot .500 on the day.

Teuber led Ursinus with 12 points going 5-9 (.556) from the floor.

Ursinus recorded 28 turnovers in the game while Hopkins only turned the ball over 18 times. Hopkins was also 21-60 (.350) from the floor and Ursinus shot 17-53 (.321).

The Blue Jays return to action on Thursday, January 14 when they travel to Haverford. Game time is set for 2:00 pm with the Blue Jay men's basketball team playing next.
