Johns Hopkins Downs Haverford, 60-55

HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Haverford, 60-55, in Centennial Conference action at Haverford. Freshman Alex Vassila (Potomic, MD/Winston Churchill) recorded her first career double-double in the victory. With the win, Hopkins improves to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the Centennial while Haverford falls to 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

The Blue Jays jumped out to a commanding 25-6 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. The run was capped by a made bucket by junior Nia Josiah (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson).

Haverford would fight right back going on a 24-8 run of their own. Haverford's Nina Voith hit a 3-pointer to make the score 33-30 with 3:16 left on the clock in the first half.

The Blue Jays would score six of the next eight points on two lay-ups by junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and a lay-up by Vassila. Hopkins entered the locker room with a 39-32 lead at halftime.

The second half proved to be a battle with the Blue Jays stretching their lead to 15 on a 3-pointer by sophomore Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) at 10:44 on the clock to make the score 51-36.

The Fords again responded with a 10-2 run over the next eight minutes to cut the Blue Jay to seven at 53-46.

The Blue Jays hit seven out of nine free-throws in the last two minutes of the game to hold off a late Haverford attack. The Fords scored nine points in the last two minutes but could not catch the Blue Jays who were strong from the foul line. The Blue Jays held on for the 60-55 win on the road, only their second win on the road this season.

Dominique Meeks of Haverford was the leading scorer in the game with 14. Calla Miller added 12 points while Victoria Sobocinski and Voith added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Vassila led Hopkins with her twelve points, but six other Blue Jays scored at least five points in the game. Vassila set her career-high for rebounds by grabbing 15 missed shots in the game.

The Blue Jays were 21-57 (.368) from the floor and 6-15 (.400) from beyond the arc in the game while Haverford was 17-49 (.347) shooting and 4-12 (.333) from 3-point range. The Blue Jays dominated the rebound battle by out-rebounding the Fords 44 to 29.

The Blue Jays return action when they host Dickinson on Saturday, January 16 at 1:00 pm. The Blue Jays will look to avenge a loss to the Red Devils earlier in the season.
