Chestertown, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team held on for a 66-61 victory at Washington College in Centennial Conference action. Junior Siobhan Callanan (Barrington, IL/Barrington) recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. With the win the Blue Jays improve to 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the Centennial. The Shorewomen fall to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in the conference.
The first half consisted of five lead changes. Washington held its last lead, 14-13, with 11:41 left in the first half after a 3-pointer by senior Jane O'Donnell. Hopkins answered back 25 seconds later with its own 3-pointer by senior Leslie Markun (Mill Valley, CA/The Branson School).
The Blue Jay lead grew to seven points on a Callanan 3-pointer with 1:17 left in the half. An old-fashioned three-point play by Washington freshman Erin Kile would cut the Hopkins lead to four when the halftime horn blew. Hopkins held a 32-28 advantage.
Five different Blue Jays sank shots from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half and were 5-12 (.417) in the half from 3-point range.
Hopkins increased their lead to 16 points at 58-42 over the first 12 minutes of the second half.
The Shorewomen fought their way to tie the game at 61-61 by going on a 19-3 run which lasted over seven minutes. Sophomore Meghan Tait tied the game at 61 with 36 seconds remaining after getting fouled on a made layup and sinking the resulting free-throw.
Sophomore Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) gave the Blue Jays the lead 19 seconds later on a made layup. Mattiola missed her "and one" oppurtunity but Callanan grabbed the rebound for Hopkins. Callanan made both her free-throws to put Hopkins up by four.
Senior Katie Biggart (Darien, Ct/Darien) added one more point from the line to give the Blue Jays the 66-61 win.
Junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) led the Blue Jays with 16 points. Callanan led the all rebounders in the game with 10 rebounds. The Blue Jays shot 26-63 (.413) in the game.
Kile led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Tait added 15 and O'Donnell added 13 points for the Shorewomen. Washington was 23-58 (.397) from the floor for the night.
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, January 23 at 6:00 pm when Bryn Mawr comes to Baltimore.
