McDaniel Slips Past Johns Hopkins, 24-16

Jan. 20, 2010

BALTIMORE, MD -- Visiting McDaniel jumped out to a 14-0 lead through four matches and held off a late rally by host Johns Hopkins as the Green Terror scored a 24-16 victory over the Blue Jays in Centennial Conference wrestling action at Goldfarb Gymnasium Wednesday night. McDaniel improves to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial, while the Blue Jays slip to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial.

The Green Terror jumped out to the 14-0 lead with victories in each of the first four bouts. Included were major decisions by Earl Eppard at 125 and Brent Lowe at 149. McDaniel took a pair of decisions at 133 and 141 with both matches decided in the final seconds. At 133, Tom Goretsas led just 7-6 in the final 15 seconds before notching a takedown and three back points to take a 12-6 decision from Johns Hopkins freshman Paul Marcello, while Mike Tancredi scored a takedown in the final seconds to edge Blue Jay freshman Matt Nelson, 3-1, at 141.

The Blue Jays jumped back into the match with consecutive wins at 157, 165 and 174 to trim the deficit to 14-10. Sophomore Michael Testa jump-started the run for the Blue Jays with a 5-1 in over Matt Peters at 157 and junior Eric Levenseller followed with a 9-3 victory over Tony Vorndran at 165. Freshman Andrew Giannascoli scored a 15-4 major decision over Scott Forrester at 174 to pull the Blue Jays within four. Levenseller's victory improved his record to a team-best 16-7 on the year and he has currently won seven straight matches.

McDaniel, which was already assured of a forfeit at 285, secured the win with a 12-2 major decision by Will Yeo over Stu Corless at 184 that extended the lead to 18-10. Hopkins got its final points at 197 when freshman Reid Mosquera pinned McDaniel's Joe Camlin in 4:15 to make it 18-16, but Brock Glotfelty took the forfeit at 285 to account for the 24-16 final score. The pin for Mosquera was his third of the season.

The win is McDaniel's second straight against Johns Hopkins after the Blue Jays had won three straight against the Green Terror. Four of the last five Johns Hopkins-McDaniel matches have now been decided by eight points or less.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, January 23 when the Blue Jays host Ursinus, Muhlenberg and Gettysburg in a Centennial Conference quad match.
