BALTIMORE, MD -- The Johns Hopkins wrestling team knocked off visiting Muhlenberg (38-9) and Gettysburg (28-22), but fell to Ursinus (24-12) in a Centennial Conference quad match at Goldfarb Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays evened their Centennial Conference record at 2-2 and moved to 4-7 overall with the results.
Hopkins opened with Ursinus and led 6-0 after back-to-back decisions by sophomore Adam Stevens (125) and freshman Paul Marcello (133), but the Bears struck back with three straight wins, including a pin by Dan Glover at 141 to take a 12-6 lead. Junior Eric Levenseller scored a 5-2 decision over Harris Papas at 165 and freshman Andrew Giannascoli added a 3-0 win over Myles Tornetta at 174 to even the match at 12-12, but a forfeit victory at 184 and back-to-back 4-2 wins by Conor McNamara at 197 and Ed Minelli at 285 secured the 24-12 win for the Bears.
Marcello jump-started the 38-9 win over Muhlenberg with a pin at the five-minute mark against Tommy Gaza. Kevin Homan drew the Mules within 12-3 with a tough 8-6 win over Matt Nelson at 141, but Rocky Barilla answered with an 8-2 decision of Matt Parker and the Blue Jays added four straight wins, including pins by Levenseller and Robbie Nedbor-Gross, to push the lead out to 34-3. After Muhlenberg's Nick Pallotta won by forfeit at 197, sophomore Rick Danilkowicz closed the victory for the Blue Jays with a 13-3 win over Chris Galletta.
The Blue Jays closed the day with the win over Gettysburg in a strange match that saw the Bullets accumulate 22 points with just four wins. The match was started at the 141-pound weight class and the Blue Jays took the first five matches to build a 22-0 lead.
Hopkins jumped out to the 22-0 lead as Barrilla scored a second-period pin of Michael Slabinski and Nelson added a 12-4 win over Jack Bostrom to fuel the spree, which also included decisions by Levenseller and Giannascoli and a forfeit victory for Michael Testa at 157.
The Bullets earned a forfeit win at 184, got an injury default victory at 197 and Bobby Christopher added a 69-second pin at 285 to draw the Bullets within 22-18. Sophomore Abe Evans' 11-3 victory over Adam Stevens at 125 knotted the match at 22, but Marcello closed with a forfeit victory to secure the win for the Blue Jays.
Marcello, Levenseller Giannascoli led the Blue Jays with three wins on the day, while Stevens, Barilla and Testa each won twice. Levenseller improved to a team-best 19-7 on the year and has a 10-match winning streak to his credit.
In the other matches at Hopkins today, Ursinus defeated Gettysburg, 37-9, and Gettysburg knocked off Muhlenberg, 31-17.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, January 30 when the Blue Jays travel to Washington & Lee for another Centennial Conference match.
