BALTIMORE, MD - In a similar outing to Saturday for the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team got an early goal from junior Sean Coleman (Lee, NH/Exeter/UNH) and the defense did the rest as Hopkins beat visiting St. Mary's, 1-0, Monday night at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays are unbeaten in their last three games and are now 9-2-3 overall. The Seahawks, meanwhile, slip to 3-9-1.
Coleman put the home team on the board in the 10th minute when he dribbled up the right touchline and then drilled a shot inside the left post that wrapped the netting around the back post. The goal was his team-leading eighth of the season. Freshman Thomas Mourmouras (Biddeford, ME/Cheverus Jesuit Prep) nearly made it a 2-0 game in the 37th minute after a nice series of tic-tac-toe passes by the Blue Jays. Mourmouras ended up with the ball and ripped a bending shot from about 25 yards out that just skipped over the crossbar. In the 39th minute, senior Kevin Hueber (Highbridge, NJ/Voorhees) had a header off a Sean Coleman (Morristown, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) corner kick that had Seahawks' goalie Paul Spranklin beat, but a defender was there to clear it off the line. Play was a little more back-and-forth in the second half, but Coleman's goal would be the only tally of the night.
Spranklin finished with 12 saves in net for the Seahawks, six in each half. For the Blue Jays, senior Ravi Gill (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) had two saves for his ninth shutout of the season. That give him 22 for his career, which ties him for fourth in school history. Hopkins finished with a distinct edge in shots (24-4) and corners (7-4).
Hopkins returns to action and Centennial Conference play on Saturday, October 16 as the team travels to Collegeville, PA to take on Ursinus. The game is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
