Princeton Edges Johns Hopkins, 9-6

PRINCETON, NJ - Princeton's Tim Wenzlau scored with just 38 seconds remaining in the second quarter to put the host Tigers on top 4-3 with a lead they would not relinquish in a 9-6 win over Johns Hopkins on Saturday. The Blue Jays slip to 10-10 overall and 2-3 in the CWPA Southern Division, while the 17th-ranked Tigers improved to 11-5 and 5-0 in the CWPA.

Tommy Donahue and Ford Spencer scored back-to-back goals in a 49-second span to put the host team up 2-0. Hopkins answered with three straight to take a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Ross Schofield (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) got the Blue Jays on the board with a man-up goal at 2:04. Sophomore Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, CA/Sacred Heart Prep) then tied the game at 2-2 just 52 seconds later. Sophomore Kielan Crow (Portola Valley, CA/Lick-Wilmerding) put Hopkins on top with its only lead of the game with his first of two at 5:48 in the second quarter. Kurt Burchbinder and Wenzlau scored a pair in the final three minutes of the second stanza to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead at the half.

Coming out of the break, Princeton got back-to-back goals from Mike Helou and Buchbinder to push out to a 6-3 lead. Hopkins came right back, getting goals from senior John Barrett (Clarendon Hills, IL/Fenwick) and Schofield to cut the deficit to one at the end of the third. Princeton opened the fourth quarter with three unanswered to stake itself a four-goal lead with 3:37 to play. Crow got one back for Hopkins with 1:55 to play to make it a 9-6 game, but the Blue Jays could get no closer.

Crow and Schofield led the Blue Jays with a pair of goals each, while Whittam had one goal, three assists and six steals. Schofield also had four steals and drew two ejections. Senior Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) had 10 saves and four steals in the cage.

Hopkins returns to action on October 23 and 24 at the 2010 CWPA Division III Eastern Championship at Connecticut College. The top-seeded Blue Jays open the tournament at 10:00 am against fifth-seeded Penn State Behrend.
