NEW LONDON, CT - The Johns Hopkins water polo team will be in a familiar place on Sunday as the Blue Jays will play for their 13th Division III Eastern Championship after knocking off Penn St. Behrend (24-5) and MIT (14-13) in the first round and semifinals, respectively, on Saturday at Connecticut College. MIT came back and beat Connecticut College in the consolation bracket (13-3) and will meet JHU for the title at 11:30 am on Sunday.
The Blue Jays had little trouble beating fifth-seeded Penn St. Behrend in its first game as 14 different players scored en route to the 19-goal margin of victory. Sophomore Alex Whittam led six multi-goal scorers for JHU as he scored a game-high five goals, while classmate Charlie Weintraub added a hat trick to help lead the way.
Senior Jermey Selbst made 10 saves with four steals in the win for the top-seeded Blue Jays.
MIT advanced to the semifinal showdown with the Blue Jays with an 18-4 win of its own against Penn St. Behrend.
Whittam punched up his second straight five-goal effort in the win over the Engineers to lead four multi-goal scorers for the Blue Jays. Sophomore Eli Levitt chipped in with a hat trick and Ross Schoefield and Kielan Crow both added two goals to help Hopkins advance to the championship game for the 19th time in school history. While Selbst had 13 saves and seven steals.
