BALTIMORE, MD - Luke Baldwin scored with the shot clock winding down and just 24.13 seconds on the game clock to lift visiting Navy to a 14-13 win over Johns Hopkins in CWPA Southern Division action Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Ross Schofield (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) led the Blue Jays (7-7) with a career and game-high six goals, while Baldwin had five for the Midshipmen (15-5).
Freshman Stephen Kingery (Moraga, CA/Campolindo) scored off an assist from senior Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) to give Hopkins its first lead of the match, at 12-11, with 5:43 to play. The Midshipmen answered just 11 seconds later with a goal from Jackson Hummeldorf to tie things up at 12-12. Schofield then gave the Blue Jays back the lead, scoring on a breakaway just over a minute later. Jordan Carter answered yet again for Navy, scoring his third of the match with 2:42 on the clock to tie the match at 13 apiece.
With the match tied and the clock ticking under a minute, Navy forced a Hopkins turnover in front of its own goal with 58 ticks on the clock. Hopkins nearly got the ball back, but it was batted around and ended up in Baldwin's hands. About 12 meters from goal with the shot clock ticking down, Baldwin lofted the ball up and over Selbst and into the goal for the game-winner.
Navy pushed out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of goals from Baldwin. Schofield, who scored the Blue Jays first four goals, cut the deficit to two at the end of the first quarter when he put home a rebound off the post. He then made it a one-goal game just 55 seconds into the second with his third straight goal. The Midshipmen answered with three unanswered in a two-minute span to take a 7-3 lead.
The Blue Jays put together a run of their own, closing the quarter on a 4-1 run. Schofield got things going with, followed by a pair from sophomore Charlie Weintraub (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake). Sophomore Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, CA/Sacred Heart Prep) closed out the half with a behind-the-back goal with just 8.51 seconds on the clock.
Schofield kept the run going, scoring to start the third quarter and tie the match at 8-8. Navy pushed back out to a two-goal lead with a 3-1 run to lead 11-9 with just under four minutes to play in the quarter. Junior Mark Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit) cut the deficit back to one on another behind-the-back shot with less than seven seconds to play in the third. Strickland scored his second straight to open the fourth to tie the match at 11 apiece.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, October 8 at the annual Claremont Convergence. JHU will take on Chapman at 11:20 am PT in Claremont, CA. Hopkins will then play La Verne at 7:20 pm PT.
