CLAREMONT, CA - The Johns Hopkins water polo team got its trip to California off on a good note, beating sixth-ranked Chapman, 10-6, to open the annual Claremont Convergence. The Blue Jays improve to 8-7 overall with the win, while the Panthers slip to 5-8.
Junior Mark Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit) and sophomores Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, CA/Sacred Heart Prep) and Ross Schofield (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) each had a pair of goals in the win. Sophomore Kielan Crow (Portola Valley, CA/Lick-Wilmerding) had a goal and an assist, while senior Michael de Lyon (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) had a season-high three assists. Senior goalie Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) had 11 saves, one assist and one steal.
Schofield now has a career-high and team-best 34 goals on the season, while Whittam leads the team with 24 assists. Selbst, who leads the nation (all divisions) in saves, has 169 on the season.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday night, taking on third-ranked Whittier at 7:20 pm EST. The Blue Jays are 2-2 all-time against the Poets.
