ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins water polo team wrapped up the regular season at Navy on Saturday, October 30. Hopkins picked up wins over George Washington (15-9) and Salem International (9-6) but lost to 15th-ranked Navy (16-7). The Blue Jays conclude the regular season at 15-12 overall and an even 4-4 in the CWPA Southern Division, East Region.

Hopkins opened the day against the host Midshipmen and the home team raced out to an 8-1 lead at the half. Navy scored the opening goal, but the Blue Jays answered with a man-up goal from freshman Stephen Kingery to tie the match with 5:34 to play in the opening stanza. It was all Midshipmen over the next 13 minutes as they went on a 7-0 run to take the 8-1 lead into the break. The teams traded goals over the course of the third quarter and Navy took a 12-5 lead into the final stanza. Sophomore Ross Schofield scored to start the fourth to make it a six-goal deficit, but his strike was answered by four straight from the Midshipmen. Junior Jeremy Mauer closed out the scoring with 1:40 to play to account for the 16-7 final.

Sophomore Alex Whittam led the Blue Jays with a pair of goals, while Kingery had a goal and an assist. Senior Jeremy Selbst had nine saves and six steals in the goal.

Hopkins then faced George Washington and came away with a 15-9 win on the strength of an 8-2 first half. Whittam put the Blue Jays on the board first with a man-up goal, but it took just 17 seconds for GW to answer to the match at 1-1. In a similar outing to the Navy match earlier in the day, it was the Blue Jays that responded with a 7-1 run to push out to an 8-2 lead at the half. Freshman Thomas de Lyon put Hopkins back on top and just 26 seconds later, Schofield staked Hopkins to a 3-1 lead. Strickland added to the lead in the second, scoring the first of his two in the quarter, before Nate Little cut the deficit in half to 4-2 with 6:30 still to play in the half. Hopkins responded with four unanswered, from four different scorers, to take the 8-2 lead at the break.

Coming out of the half, the teams traded goals back and forth as neither team could string together more than two straight goals. The scoring was spread out once again as four different Blue Jays scored in the third quarter. Hopkins led 12-6 entering the final stanza, but the Colonials weren't going away. They scored three straight to open the quarter to cut the lead to 12-9 with more than three minutes to play. Hopkins wasn't going to let this one slip away and scored the final three goals of the match to take the 15-9 win.

The Blue Jays were led by de Lyon with his first career hat trick, while Strickland also netted a hat trick. Schofield totaled a team-high six points with two goals and four assists. Freshman Chance Fowler made eight saves with two assists and one steal to earn the win.

Hopkins closed out the day with a match against Salem International. The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead before the Blue Jays answered to tie the match on goals from freshman Chase Hamilton and sophomore Gerrard Clark after one half. Salem International retook the lead at 5-3 with a 3-1 run to open the third quarter. Hopkins got goals from freshman Kevin Zepfel and Hamilton to make it a 5-4 game heading into the final quarter. Hopkins took over from there, outscoring SIU 5-1 to take the 9-6 win. Hamilton led the Blue Jays with his first career hat trick while Zepfel had a pair. Fowler finished with six saves in the win.

Hopkins returns to action this weekend at the 2010 CWPA Southern Division Championship at Navy. JHU earned the third seed and will take on sixth-seeded George Washington on Saturday at 9:00 am. It will be the third meeting in the last 10 days between the two squads.
