BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team shot a stellar 51.9 percent from the floor and received double-digit scoring outputs from three different players to defeat visiting Washington College, 73-50, on Tuesday night in Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays have now won five straight games and improve to 5-1 (2-0 CC) on the year, while the Shorewomen drop to 2-3 (0-1 CC).
After a sluggish start by both sides, JHU took control of the game early and jumped out to a 26-15 lead with 9:18 left in the opening half. However, the Shorewomen would not go away easily as they continued to attack the offensive boards and went on a 18-7 run to knot the game at 33-33.
With the game deadlocked at 33-33 and just one second remaining in the first half, junior Chantel Mattiola sank a long-range three-pointer from the right side off an inbounds pass from classmate Stephanie Fong. The three-pointer gave Hopkins a 36-33 advantage going into the halftime break.
Senior Siobhan Callanan found junior Kat Fox on a beautiful backdoor cut to open the second half for Hopkins and the Blue Jays scored the first six points of the second stanza to extend their lead to 42-33.
The Hopkins defense buckled down in the second half as it held Washington without a field goal for nearly the first five minutes and forced the visitors to shoot just 22.6 percent from the floor after the intermission.
Freshman Fatu Conteh scored on a layup at the 14:31 mark to extend JHU's lead to 48-36 and push the Blue Jay run to 15-3 (including Mattiola's three-pointer at the close of the first half). A layup by sophomore Erin Kile pulled the Shorewomen within eight at the 15:19 mark, but they would get no closer as the Blue Jays maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and outscored the Shorewomen by 20 in the second half to secure the win.
Senior Lyndsay Burton recorded a game-high 21 points and a team-best eight rebounds to pace Hopkins, while Callanan totaled 16 points, a career-high seven assists and five rebounds. Mattiola also posted double-digit points for the Blue Jays with 15 and added a game-high four steals.
Hopkins shot 51.9 percent from the field in the game, including 63.6 percent (7-11) from three-point land, while Washington shot just 32.8 percent from the floor.
Kile led the Shorewomen with 17 points and three blocks, while junior Meghan Tait recorded 10 points, a game-high eight assists and grabbed four boards.
Hopkins returns to the court on Thursday, December 2 at Gettysburg in Centennial Conference action. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
