WESTMINSTER, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 67-47 victory at McDaniel in Centennial Conference action on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays are now 8-1 (5-0 CC) on the year, while the Green Terror fall to 0-7 (0-5 CC). JHU is off to its best start since the 2004-05 season, when it also started 8-1.
Hopkins had trouble finding an offensive rhythm early on in the game, as the Green Terror forced four Blue Jay turnovers in the opening five minutes and jumped out to early leads of 5-0 and 9-4. The JHU offense was eventually able to settle down and the Blue Jays took their first lead at the 11:53 mark of the first half on a layup by senior Lyndsay Burton.
After taking the lead for the first time Hopkins began pushing the pace of the game as the first half wore on, creating several quality scoring opportunities in transition off McDaniel misses.
Leading 22-19 with 4:55 remaining in the first half, the Blue Jays held McDaniel scoreless over its next six possessions on their way to a 12-0 run, capped by a Burton jumper, to take a 34-19 lead with just 55 seconds remaining until halftime.
A Kim Acton layup with 35 seconds left halted the Blue Jay run, but JHU went into the intermission with a comfortable 34-21 advantage.
Mattiola began the second half on a positive note for Hopkins, hitting a three-pointer from the top of the key off a feed from junior Stephanie Fong to give JHU a 37-21 lead. Senior Siobhan Callanan drilled a jumper to give the Blue Jays their then-largest lead of the contest at 46-27 at the 16:40 mark of the second half. However, Hopkins went cold from the field after Callanan's jumper and was held scoreless over the next 6:34.
McDaniel went on a 7-0 run during Hopkins' scoreless stretch to cut the Blue Jay lead to 12, but the Green Terror would get no closer as Mattiola buried another three-pointer, this one from the right corner, to put a halt to the McDaniel run and push the Hopkins lead back to 15.
The Blue Jays outscored the Green Terror 18-13 the rest of the way to secure the 20-point road victory.
Burton recorded a game-high 17 points on 8-11 shooting and added six rebounds for Hopkins, while sophomore Alex Vassila added 12 points and a game-high seven boards. Mattiola continued her hot shooting from the outside as she drained a trio of three-pointers en route to 11 points and also notched a career-high nine assists. Callanan also reached double figures for the Blue Jays with 11 points and six rebounds.
Acton scored 14 points to lead the Green Terror, while Cara Thompson added 10 points in the loss.
The Blue Jays must now wait nearly a month to play their next game when they travel to Bryn Mawr on Wednesday, January 5 for a Centennial Conference matchup at 7 pm.
