Hopkins Stuns McDaniel, 65-60

Westminster, MD- The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat McDaniel, 65-60. McDaniel was on a 17-game winning streak with their last loss coming on December 1. Junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) led the Blue Jays with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the double-double. The Blue Jays improve to 12-8 overall and 10-6 in the Centennial Conference. McDaniel falls to 17-5 overall and 15-3 in the conference.

McDaniel scored the first five points of the game and jumped out to a 12-2 lead five minutes into the game. Freshman Katelyn Fischer scored seven of the 12 points for McDaniel.

The Blue Jays responded by going on an 11-2 run and making the score 14-13 in the favor of the Green Terror at the 12:50 mark. Sophomore Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) capped the run with a 3-pointer.

McDaniel slowly pulled away over the remainder of the first half and took a 12-point lead into the locker room after Fischer drained a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left. McDaniel led, 38-26, at the half.

Burton scored the last nine Blue Jay points of the half and finish with 13 first half points, half of the Blue Jay total. Fischer had 15 first-half points for the Terror while senior Ali Moreland added 12 in the half.

Hopkins came out strong in the second half and cut the McDaniel lead to three at 41-38 on a lay-up by freshman Alex Vassila (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) with 16:12 showing on the game clock.

At 10:12, Mattiola drained her second 3-pointer of the game to make the score 48-47 in McDaniel's favor. Senior Anastasia Wynn (Reisterstown, MD/Gov Thomas Johnson) gave Hopkins the lead on a lay-up twenty seconds later on a pass from senior Katie Biggart (Darien, CT/Darien).

The Blue Jays increased their lead to five points (53-48) at 6:42 on two free-throws by senior Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg).

McDaniel tied the game at 58 apiece on a jumper by junior Cara Thompson at the 2:22 mark. The lead would then change hands twice with Hopkins taking a 61-60 lead with 1:30 to play on a Mattiola lay-up.

Biggart increased the Blue Jay lead to three at the 15 second mark on a lay-up. Biggart then clinched the win for Hopkins by hitting two free-throws with three seconds on the clock after grabbing a defensive rebounds on a missed Green Terror 3-pointer.

Biggart and Mattiola each scored in double digits for Hopkins with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Three players for McDaniel scored in the double digits. Fischer led the team with 17 points while senior Ashley Lyles added 16 and Moreland scored 14 points.

The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow, February 13 when they host Haverford in their Pink Zone game. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
