EVANSTON, IL - The Johns Hopkins women's team faced some tough competition at the annual Northwestern Duals over the weekend, including five top 10 teams. The Blue Jays went 5-9 with five fencers finishing above .500 for the weekend. Hopkins' wins came against Detroit Mercy, Fairleigh Dickinson, Cal Tech, Cleveland State and Lawrence.
In the Epee, sophomore Lauren Chinn (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) led the Blue Jays with a 24-8 record to move her record this season to 45-11. Among her 24 wins, she picked up a pair of wins each in bouts against fifth-ranked Northwestern, sixth-ranked Ohio State, second-ranked Notre Dame, seventh-ranked Temple and ninth-ranked Princeton. Freshman Komal Kumar (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro) and junior Corinne Warren (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) also had solid weekends in the Epee, finishing 23-15 and 15-11, respectively. Sophomore Chelsea James (Lombard, IL/Glenband East) went 12-18.
Sophomore Marion Trumbull (Westport, CT/Hopkins School) finished 18-14 to highlight the Blue Jays efforts in the Foil. She is now 59-19 on the year and boasts the most wins on the team, in any weapon. Sophomore Jen Hession (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) went 15-19, while sophomore Colleen Stone (Woodbury, MN/Math and Science Academy) went 10-15. Sophomore Sofia de Benedictis (London, England/Chelteham Ladies' College) finished 11-24 for the weekend.
In the Sabre, junior Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) led the team with a 21-17 record and is now 56-28 on the year. Sophomore Katie Herman (Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley Regional) went 10-23, while sophomore Amy Conwell (Ardmore, PA/Country Day School of the Sacred Heart) and freshman Shelby Hecht (Forest Hills, NY/Townsend Harris) each picked up five wins.
Hopkins is now idle for three weeks as the Blue Jays prepare for the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championship (EWFC). The EWFC Team championship is scheduled for February 21 and will be held in Madison, NJ. The EWFC Individual Championship is scheduled for the following week, February 28 in Hoboken, NJ.
