PITTSBURGH, PA - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team split its matches Friday afternoon on the first day of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa., defeating Muskingum in five sets before falling to Case in four sets. The Blue Jays move to 5-5 on the year.
Hopkins topped Muskingum 3-2 in the first match with set scores of 25-17, 21-25, 28-26, 18-25 and 15-4. The loss drops the Muskies to 3-4.
Junior Melissa Cole posted a double-double with 18 kills and 28 digs to lead the Blue Jays. Senior Alica Diehl recorded 26 kills and classmate KC Stingl tallied six kills and 16 digs. Senior Brittany Zimmer posted 11 kills, while sophomore Becky Paynter led the team in assists with 41.
In the second match of the day, the Blue Jays fell to Case, 3-1. The Spartans won the first two sets by identical scores of 25-14, before Hopkins bounced back to take the third, 25-23. Case closed out the victory in the fourth set, 25-18. The win improves the Spartans to 8-3 on the season.
Zimmer paced the Blue Jays in kills with 13, while Cole added 11 kills. Paynter recorded 31 assists in the loss.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 18 to close out the Carnegie Mellon Crossover with matches against John Caroll at 12 pm and host Carnegie Mellon at 4 pm.
