CAMBRIDGE, MA - After dropping its first match at the 2010 ECAC Championship, the fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins water polo team earned wins over George Washington and Fordham to finish in fifth place at the championship. The Blue Jays opened with a tough 10-9 overtime loss to Brown before rattling off wins over division rival GW (7-4) and Fordham (9-6).
Hopkins trailed fifth-seeded Brown 4-2 at the half, but stormed back in the third quarter to take a 7-6 lead heading into the final stanza. It was a tight fourth quarter, as the Bears edged the Blue Jays, 3-2, to send the match into overtime tied at 9-9. Corey Schwartz was the hero for Brown, scoring the overtime winner, to give the Bears their first win over the Blue Jays in its fifth try at the ECACs.
Sophomore Ross Schofield (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) notched his second straight hat trick to lead the Blue Jays, while sophomore Kielan Crow (Portola Valley, CA/Lick-Wilmerding) had two goals, one assist and four steals. Senior goalie Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) made 12 saves and had nine steals for Hopkins.
Hopkins was back in the pool just a few hours later, facing off against CWPA Southern Division rival George Washington. The Blue Jays got the better of the Colonials, winning 7-4, to set up yet another match-up with the Fordham Rams. The Hopkins' defense shone in the win over George Washington, holding the Colonials to just two goals over the final three quarters.
Schofield, senior John Barrett (Clarendon Hills, IL/Fenwick) and freshman Stephen Kingery (Moraga, CA/Campolindo) combined to score six of the Blue Jays' seven goals. Selbst had five saves, four steals and a pair of assists in the win.
In the fifth-place match on Sunday, Hopkins and Fordham met for the third straight weekend, with each team earning a win. After dropping a disappointing 8-5 decision to the Rams last weekend at the Princeton Invitational, the Blue Jays got the better of them with a 9-6 win. Trailing 4-3 at the half, Hopkins stepped it up in the final two quarters, outscoring Fordham 6-2 to take the win.
Schofield led the way with his second hat trick of the weekend, with Barrett and sophomore Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, CA/Sacred Heart Prep) each chipping in a pair of goals. Crow added three assists and Selbst stopped 12 shots while also grabbing three steals.
Hopkins returns to action this week and kicks of CWPA Southern Division play at home against Bucknell on Friday night at 8:00 pm. JHU will then face Princeton on Saturday at noon, also at home.
