BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team defeated Washington 3-1 on Thursday night at Goldfarb Gym in Centennial Conference action. Hopkins evens its record at 7-7 (2-0 CC), while Washington drops to 6-9 (0-2 CC).
The Blue Jays took control of the opening set from the start, jumping out to leads of 7-1 and 14-7. The Shorewomen cut the Blue Jay lead to five at 17-12, but would get no closer as the Blue Jays won the first set 25-15.
Senior Taryn Segal opened the set with several strong serves, including one ace, to push the Blue Jays to an early 6-0 advantage. Hopkins never looked back and cruised to take the set, 25-5.
JHU grabbed an early 10-3 lead in the third set and looked well on its way to a sweep of the visiting Shorewomen, but Washington fought back and took its first lead of the match at 14-13. Several clutch kills by sophomore Jenny Lee helped the Shorewomen capture the third set, 25-23.
Hopkins rebounded in the fourth set to close out the match, 25-15.
Junior Melissa Cole notched a match-high 15 kills and added seven digs, while sophomore Becky Paynter dished out 26 assists and tallied seven digs. Senior Brittany Zimmer added a season-high five service aces.
Lee led the Shorewomen in kills with 11, while sophomore Kaitlin Rowan recorded a match-best 13 digs. Freshman Lauren White totaled 19 assists and added nine digs.
Hopkins returns to action this weekend at the Spartan Invitational hosted by York College in York, Pa. The Blue Jays will open the tournament against Rutgers-Camden on Friday, September 24 at 3 pm.
