BALTIMORE, MD - Salisbury's Mike Napolitano scored in the 61st minute to lift the visiting Sea Gulls to a 1-0 win over Johns Hopkins Tuesday night in non-conference action at Homewood Field. The loss drops the Blue Jays to 6-2-2 on the season, while the Sea Gulls remain unbeaten at 9-0-2. The win is the first for Salisbury in the last three meetings between the two schools, as SU snapped a 282-minute scoreless streak against the Blue Jays.
Hopkins had numerous dangerous scoring chances in the match, but it was Salisbury that was able to get on the board. Senior goalie Ravi Gill (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) came off his line to cut off a Sea Gull threat but was unable to control the ball and it skipped out wide to Stafford Chipungu. He collected the ball and played it across the box to Napolitano, who headed in at the far post in the 61st minute. In the 79th minute, senior Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne) had a great chance to pull the game even when he ripped a hard shot from about 20 yards out but a diving John Vnenchak just got his fingers on it to deflect the shot wide.
Gill finished with four saves in the loss for the Blue Jays, while Vnenchak had three in posting his fifth shutout of the year. Hopkins held a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corners, while Salisbury had 16 fouls to just six for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins returns to action and continues its three-game home stand on Thursday, September 30 against McDaniel. The Centennial Conference tilt is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
